Tolls on Halifax bridges to be removed two weeks ahead of schedule

The Nova Scotia government says tolls on the Halifax Harbour Bridges will be removed on March 17, two weeks ahead of the original planned date.

“This is great news for commuters, and we’re proud that we’re delivering on our election promise of removing the tolls,” said Public Works Minister Fred Tilley. “It’s one less fee to pay when getting where you need to go and more money back in the pockets of Nova Scotians.”

Originally the tolls were set to be removed on April 1. The government now says that will happen as of 5 a.m. on Monday, March 17.

Halifax Harbour Bridges (HHB) meantime says the Macdonald Bridge will be closed on the weekends of March 14 and 21 so workers can begin removing toll plazas.

“Dismantling the toll plazas is a complex process,” says HHB CEO Tony Wright. “We are working with industry specialists and contractors to make sure the work proceeds as efficiently and safely as possible and as quickly as possible.”

As for the MacKay Bridge, HHB says weekend closure dates have not yet been finalized for that span but early work to remove tolls plazas will begin this month as well.
