SiRT investigating after man seriously injured in New Glasgow

The province’s police watchdog is investigating after a man was seriously injured during an arrest in New Glasgow.

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) says it is reviewing an incident that began with an attempted traffic stop on April 27 by New Glasgow Police.

Preliminary information indicates an officer tried to stop a vehicle believed to be stolen. The vehicle fled and collided with an unrelated vehicle at the intersection of Temperance and MacLean streets.

Police say the male driver fled on foot but was arrested a short time later. He was taken to hospital and diagnosed with a broken shoulder.

Because the man suffered a serious injury, SiRT has taken over the investigation.

SiRT investigates all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, including those resulting in death, serious injury, allegations of sexual assault, or incidents of significant public interest. The oversight body operates independently and is led by a civilian director, who decides whether charges should be laid.
