Renowned astronomer to speak at Saint Mary’s University

There’s a lot of excitement in Halifax’s astronomy community ahead of a free public talk next week at Saint Mary’s University.

The school will host the event on Tuesday, June 3, featuring astrophysicist Dr. JJ Kavelaars. The talk, titled, Cosmic Fossils and the Origins of Planets, begins at 7 p.m. in the McNally Auditorium.

Dr. Rob Thacker, an astrophysicist at SMU, says the event is a chance to highlight Canadian space research.

“It’s really about trying to get someone who is a really good communicator in front of the public to talk about the amazing astronomy that is happening in Canada,” said Thacker.

The event will tackle topics like Kuiper Belt objects, how planets are formed, and how the acient and distant bodies can help humans learn about our own solar system.

Kavelaars, known to many as Dr. JJ, is renowned for his work on solar system astronomy, including the discovery of moons around Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

The event is free and open to the public. No tickets are required.
