Richmond County wildfire now being held, says DNR

A forest fire on Cape Breton Island has been classified as being “held” on Friday afternoon.

The Municipality of the County of Richmond says the blaze started near Three Rivers Road in Framboise around 5 p.m. on May 29 and has grown to more than 15 hectares.

It has crossed at least one roadway and destroyed an old trailer that had been vacant for more than two decades.

In an update at noon on Friday, the Department of Natural Resources says the fire is now being held and remains at 15 hectares.

“We still have 17 DNR firefighters on the scene working alongside regional volunteer fire departments,” the department wrote in a social media update. “Weather conditions are currently favourable for the firefighting efforts.”

There have been no evacuation orders, but residents in the area are being urged to stay alert.

Multiple volunteer fire departments responded, but have since left the area. They are expected to return to the scene this morning along with ground crews from the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables.

County officials say air support could be brought in if needed.
