Faculty and professional librarians at the Atlantic School of Theology could go on strike as early as July 1, potentially cancelling classes and librarian services.
In a letter to the school’s board of governors dated June 13, the Atlantic School of Theology Faculty Association said the move is a response to what it calls a persistent and significant decline in compensation relative to peer institutions, the cost of living and inflation.
The association says members have carried a disproportionate share of the financial burden linked to the school’s long-standing fiscal challenges, while administrative salaries continue to increase.
“This strike is not simply a matter of compensation,” the association said in a statement. “It is a demand for AST to recommit to core institutional priorities, and to realign money with mission. Members are no longer willing to have our livelihoods eroded while the school we love to serve steadily crumbles around us.”
A final conciliation session is scheduled for June 30.
The union says a fair collective agreement would show the board is committed to responsible governance and renewed fundraising efforts. Its members, the statement says, reject what it calls an approach where “unjust wages underwrite administrative failure.”
