Those driving around Halifax can expect rolling closures as the Highway of Heroes annual motorcycle ride commences for the seventh year.
The ride is a tribute to the Fallen members as well as the present and still lost members of the Police, Fire, EMS and Military. Participants ride along Highway 111, then onto Highway 118, and northbound to Highway 102, escorted from Dartmouth to Truro.
The ride began at 1 p.m.
The founder of the ride, Army Veteran George Anthis, said when he started the ride seven years ago he hoped for 75 to 100 participants. Last year saw almost 400 riders.
“I thank you for your support and hope that you can donate as well as come out and witness such an amazing, overwhelming, emotional and supportive ride,” Anthis said in a statement on the campaign’s website.
Halifax Regional Police says it will be assisting with traffic control during the event.
“There will be temporary, rolling closures at intersections and on-ramps along the route,” police say. “There will be no full street closures.”
Delays are to be expected.
