Lake George wildfire under control: DNR

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) said the Lake George wildfire is now under control.

The fire ignited Sept. 28 and quickly grew to an estimated 288 hectares.

The wildfire forced evacuations of 350 civic addresses. Those individuals were allowed to return home on Thursday.

Unseasonably warm temperatures provided a huge challenge for responding crews. Temperatures are expected to continue to cool throughout the week, and there may be some rain as well.

DNR says no structures were damaged and crews expect to have the fire fully extinguished before winter conditions arrive.

“We will use infrared scanning to detect hot spots,” DNR said in an update on X. “Crews walk through the active fire zone, smelling for smoke and feeling the ground for heat with their hands. They dig and douse with water to put the hot spots out.”

DNR staff have received support from local firefighters as well as crews from B.C. and infrastructure from Newfoundland and Northwest Territories.
