Mooseheads fall 7-4 to Regiment in return home

The Halifax Mooseheads returned to the Scotiabank Centre on Wednesday evening after a three game road trip through Quebec to welcome the Newfoundland Regiment. Halifax looked to respond after their last game against the Regiment where they were defeated 5-2 but once again Newfoundland proved too strong.

The Mooseheads struck first in a high scoring period at the Scotiabank Centre as Connor MacPherson fired a rebound off a shot from Caylen Blake past Regiment netminder Louis-Antoine Denault 2:28 into the frame. Alexis Michaud then tied the contest for Newfoundland at 6:36, tipping Noah Laberge’s shot past Owen Bresson while on the powerplay. Halifax restored their lead on the man advantage at 13:49 as Liam Kilfoil sniped a shot past the glove of Denault. The Regiment then scored two unanswered to wrap up the opening 20 minutes with a 3-2 lead as Justin LaRose and Dawson Sharkey both found the back of the Mooseheads’ goal.

Newfoundland continued their scoring touch in the second period as Marek Danicek and Benjamin Veitch extended the Regiment’s lead to 5-2.

Halifax attempted a comeback early in the third period as Samuel Rousseau fired his 8th of the season past Denault at 0:45 after taking a cross ice pass from Daniel Walters and Malik L’Italien intercepted a pass before blasting a shot into the Newfoundland net at 6:04  to bring the Herd within one. The Regiment would respond as Sharkey added his second of the night and Alexis Mathieu scored his first as a member of Newfoundland to power the Regiment to a 7-4 victory over the Mooseheads.

With the loss, Halifax falls to 21-21-3-2 on the season.

Sharkey was awarded first star honours with a pair of goals, second star went to Danicek with a goal and an assist while Rousseau was named third star with a goal.

The Mooseheads are back on the road Friday Feb. 6, for the latest instalment of the battle of Nova Scotia as they face the Cape Breton Eagles at Centre 200.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m., with live coverage on 95.7 NewsRadio featuring Garreth MacDonald.
