New mobile health clinic opens in downtown Halifax

Downtown Halifax has a new option for those looking for timely access to non-urgent medical care.

According to Nova Scotia Health, the Citadel Health Home on Dresden Row has opened as a part-time mobile health clinic.

Announced on Friday in a release, the healthy authority says the clinic sees patients connected to one of its physicians or nurse practitioners during the day, but it will now offer help for prescription renewals, sore throats, headaches, fever, cold or flu or other non-urgent health issues after hours on specific days.

“We know people can’t always wait to see their own family doctor or nurse practitioner,” said Jasmine Asad, a primary healthcare manager with Nova Scotia Health in the release. “And sometimes they need to be seen in-person instead of virtually. Our clinic gives people on the peninsula another option for timely in-person care for common health concerns, right in their community.”

The clinic will be geared towards non-urgent care, meaning it does not offer emergency services or order bloodwork or diagnostic imaging such as X-rays and ultrasounds, provide immunizations, or complete medical forms.

Despite the name, most mobile clinics now take place in existing clinics and buildings, not in mobile vehicles.

Nova Scotia Health says the clinics are considered “mobile” because they pop up wherever there is a community need.
