The residents of at least forty units are left without their homes after a fire broke out in a Dartmouth apartment building early this morning, forcing them to be evacuated.
911 received reports of the blaze at 12:50 a.m. at 249 Windmill Road.
Halifax Fire’s acting division commander Steve Auton told News 95.7 fire crews were able to respond quickly to the emergency.
“There was extensive damage to the roof above 3 or four of the apartments and extensive water damage throughout the centre section of the building,” Auton said.
Residents living in the north and south wings of the building were able to re-enter their apartments after the blaze was extinguished.
Auton said the fire started on a balcony on the sixth floor, and spread throughout the centre-section of the building and into the attic.
Dan Bedell of the Canadian Red Cross told News 95.7 they have set up a temporary shelter for 63 displaced residents at Farrell Hall.
“Certainly there will be a number of tenants that won’t be back any time soon just because of the damage to their apartments,” said Bedell.
No one was hurt in the blaze and investigators are still looking into the cause.
