Yarmouth MLA resigns over spending scandal

A member of the Nova Scotia legislature embroiled in the spending allowance scandal has resigned.
Tory MLA Richard Hurlburt stepped down as representative for Yarmouth Tuesday afternoon.
“He is certainly regretting the decisions that he made and what he considers to be an error in judgment,” says Tory leader Karen Casey.
After the auditor general’s report last week which exposed excessive and inappropriate spending amongst MLAs, Hurlburt fessed up to purchasing a generator for $7995 which was installed in his home.
He originally defended his purchase, however later apologized and repaid the amount.
On Monday Premier Darrell Dexter asked the Speaker of the House to release all the names involved in the report.
The list revealed Hurlburt as the purchaser of the 40-inch LCD television for $2499 and another $579 for professional installation.
Casey says despite Hurlburt’s central involvement in a scandal that has rocked all three political parties, she didn’t push him to resign.
“He’s been a valuable member of caucus and he’s been one of the best constituency MLAs we’ve had in ten years,” says Casey.
The resignation takes effect immediately.
