Shubenacadie Sam sees shadow

Bad news as we prepare for 10-15 cms of snow later today, Shubenacadie Sam has seen his shadow, meaning there’s no quick end in site for the wintry weather.
According to folklore, when a prognosticating groundhog spots in shadow on February 2nd, it means six more weeks of winter.
“Given the weather forecast and the amount of snow currently on the ground, Sam’s prediction likely isn’t a surprise to most Nova Scotians,” said Natural Resources Minister Zach Churchill. “I’d like to thank Sam and all the staff at the Shubenacadie Wildlife Park for the preparation they put into Groundhog Day and for such a fun morning of activities.”
Shubenacadie Sam is in his 27th season of predicting the end of winter.
Being on the East Coast, Nova Scotia’s furry friend is the first groundhog to make its forecast in North America.
About an hour and a half after his big moment, Shubenacadie Sam said via twitter that he was exhausted and it was time for his nap.
Sam’s American friend Punxsutawney Phil also saw his shadow, but a glimmer of hope came from Ontario where the albino groundhog Wiarton Willie is predicting an early spring.
