Organization key to filing tax return on time: expert

It’s that unfortunate time of year, when you have to rifle through receipts, and track down T4s so you can file your income taxes.

You might not be a big fan of math but Canada Revenue Agency’s Pat Olmstead says tax season doesn’t have to be a dreadful time of year.

“The biggest thing is to certainly wait until you’ve received all of your slips,” she said. “People get anxious and they rush to get their return done before they’ve accumulated all of the slips and necessary things to file their return.”

Returns are due at the end of April – still six weeks away – but if you’re overwhelmed, Olmstead says you could try tax return software.

“It’s a much faster means to file your return, and the majority of the softwares that are available to the public are quite inclusive of everything,” she said.

Olmstead also notes there are a number of things to be aware of, including the home renovation tax credit, the first-time home buyers credit, public transit, pension income splitting, and the children fitness tax credit.
