Spring snow in forecast for the Halifax-area

HALIFAX – While spring is in the air, winter is in the forecast as Halifax could see up to 15 centimetres of snow beginning late Thursday afternoon.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the Halifax-area calling for snow or rain, as a low pressure system is pushing from the south into Nova Scotia and toward Cape Breton.

“Really the question mark is how much snow we’re going to get and how much rain we’re going to get,” Zurawski said, as he anticipates between 5 and 10 centimetres of wet snow in the metro, with a possibility of 15 centimetres anywhere on the eastern mainland.

There is still a small possibility the precipitation could fall as rain only because of uncertainty surrounding temperatures, which is also making it hard to predict which area of the province will be hardest hit.

Depending on whether snow or rain falls it could be a tricky commute for drivers on Friday morning, Zurawski warns.

Regardless, he called a forecast of snow in mid-April “strange,” but not unheard of, as it’s been known to snow as late as May.
