Police continue to hand out tickets for using a cellphone while driving

A woman was fined nearly $1,000 after a weekend incident that police say should have been avoidable.
Saturday morning around 11:30 a couple was hit in a crosswalk at Herring Cove Road and Dentith Road.
“They were struck in a crosswalk by a person operating a vehicle while talking on a cellphone,” says Cst. Brian Palmeter with Halifax Police. “The driver was subsequently issued a ticket for talking on the cellphone while operating the vehicle as well as failing to yeild to a pedestrian.”
The fines added up to nearly $1,000.
Talking on your cellphone while driving has been illegal in Nova Scotia since April 1, 2008.
It may be the law, but police say drivers continue to flaunt it. Palmeter says police have issued nearly 500 tickets this year for driving while talking on a cellphone.
He says unfortunately people are either not getting the message or they’re choosing to ignore it.
