Thinking in circles: four new roundabouts proposed for HRM

Four Halifax intersections could be turned into roundabouts.
A city staff report that will be presented to regional council on Tuesday suggests the change would save time and improve safety – but some people around the council chambers may need convincing.
The four possible locations for roundabouts include the north-end five-way intersection of Duffus, Novalea and Devonshire, both intersections on the east side of the Common, and the willow tree intersection at Robie and Quinpool.
The staff report suggests a roundabout would save drivers more than four minutes during the afternoon rush, and cites several other environmental, aesthetic and safety benefits.
Coun. Jerry Blumenthal (Halifax North End) says he’s open to transforming the Duffus-Novalea-Devonshire intersection but is concerned about pedestrian safety.
The mayor says he’d need to be convinced to put in roundabouts in intersections that appear to be working given it would cost about $1 million – compared to the $350,000 required to overhaul the existing intersections.
