Burnside jail inmate beaten, scalded during attack

An 18-year-old inmate at the Burnside Jail was reportedly beaten and held down by another inmate while scalding water was poured over his head.

The Herald has obtained a document detailing the August 15th incident in which a jail employee writes the hot water jugs “need to go” before an employee is attacked.

A justice department spokesperson confirms an inmate was treated on Aug. 15 for burns caused by hot liquid, but wouldn’t provide details.

The department investigated and police were notified. Spokesperson Cst. Brian Palmeter says the alleged victim has been released from jail and hasn’t been in touch with police, so the investigation is on hold.
