New taxi bylaws have come into effect in HRM.
These rules eliminate the 'taxi zones' that previously restricted drop-offs and pick-ups in certain areas of the municipality.
The number of taxi owner licenses has also increased from 1,000 to 1,600, allowing taxi drivers from the years-long wait list to be offered an owner's license. The municipality says in a release that the wait list is still several years long.
Drivers are also now required to complete mandatory training, including a winter driving course and cultural sensitivity training when it becomes available.
This requirement comes in part as a result of various taxi drivers in the HRM being accused of sexual assault on passengers, including one in early September 2019.
Another new bylaw requires all taxi drivers to install debit and credit machines, as well as GPS monitors. Drivers have up to six months to fulfill this requirement.
