Hal-Con latest event to be cancelled due to COVID-19

Hal-Con is the latest big event to be cancelled in Halifax this year due to the ongoing pandemic.

The science fiction, fantasy, and gaming convention was supposed to take place in October.

The Hal-Con Board of Directors said it's apparent the requirement for physical distancing to curb the spread of COVID-19 won't be going away any time soon. Their event attracts over 15,000 every year.

They said it was a difficult decision, but they have to keep the community safe.

“To us-and to many of you-Hal-Con is more than just an annual event,” the board said in a news release Friday. “It's a celebration of all of the wonderful geeky communities that thrive in this city, in this country, and on this planet.”

“It's a place to be yourself. It's a place to be a character entirely unlike yourself. It's a chance to meet old heroes and discover new ones, whether they're up on the main stage or waiting next to you in line.”

The board members said they now have plenty of time to make sure 2021's Hal-Con event next October is incredible.

“We will make additional announcements when we know the status of other events we hold throughout the year,” they said. “We're also planning some fun virtual events, so stay tuned to our social media channels and our website for details.”

Anyone who booked a hotel room with the special Hal-Con rate will automatically have their reservations cancelled without penalty.

Those who booked accommodations independently are responsible for cancelling those reservations, along with any associated fees.
