Halifax appears to have a serial dine and dasher – a woman who's eating at Halifax restaurants, then skipping out on the bill.
When the manager of a local restaurant asked other eateries if they had any issues with the same woman, they found five or six of them had.
Atlantic vice-president of Restaurants Canada Luc Erjavec says it's a rare occurrence, but that doesn't mean it should be taken lightly.
Erjavec says he encourages servers and restaurant operators to remain vigilant.
“I think it's great that people have been active on social media to warn other operators and others in the industry about this,” said Erjavec.
While police confirm a 43-year-old woman has been charged with “fraudulently obtaining food and lodging'' seven times since March, Erjavec hopes this doesn't lead to restaurants having people pay prior to eating.
“I would hate to see it go in that direction. As I said, dine and dash happens on a very small number of occasions.”
He also notes that restaurants can run very tight margins so this type of stealing hurts owners and servers.
