Winter parking ban in effect overnight into Sunday for Halifax

By Chris Stoodley

The Halifax Regional Municipality is putting the winter parking ban into effect overnight into Sunday to help crews clear sidewalks and streets.

From 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. on Jan. 30, all vehicles must be off municipal streets. This applies to Zone 1 (Central) and Zone 2 (Non-Central), the boundaries of which can be found on Halifax's online tool.

Whether an overnight parking ban is in effect, vehicles that block snow-clearing work risk being towed.

Police officers will also be ticketing any vehicles that block sidewalk clearing such as vehicles that are hanging out of driveways or parked on sidewalks.

“Such obstacles prevent crews from clearing the sidewalks properly, which can quickly become an accessibility issue for pedestrians, including seniors, people with mobility issues and parents pushing strollers,” an HRM news release says.

People must not clear snow from their property onto the street or sidewalk. Instead, property owners must pile snow onto their own property.

The HRM also asks people to remove portable objects such as planters and lawn decorations that sit near the sidewalk. Permanent structures that cannot be moved should be flagged with a reflector that's high enough for crews to see.

The Halifax area, as well as other parts of Nova Scotia, is expected to see a weekend storm that will likely bring “a little mix of everything,” according to Environment Canada.
