Mooseheads fall to Saint John at home

After two weeks on the road, the Halifax Mooseheads returned to the Scotiabank Centre on Friday night as they fell in a 5-2 decision to the Saint John Sea Dogs.

The Sea Dogs controlled the first period, as they outshot the Mooseheads 22-3, resulting in a 2-0 lead for Saint John heading into the first intermission. Alexander Donovan opened the scoring at 3:27 with his 22nd of the season, and Zach Morin found the back of the Halifax net on a powerplay at 17:17 after Shawn Carrier was sent to the penalty box for checking from behind.

Things did not improve for the Herd in the second period. Maxime Côté sent a one-timer from the right-wing faceoff circle past Owen Bresson at 5:51 after taking a pass from Morin. Donovan then added his second of the game, ripping a shot through the pads of Bresson at 14:08.

It appeared the Mooseheads added their first of the night at 2:56 of the third as Caylen Blake redirected a shot from Cam Minella past Sea Dogs’ netminder Arseni Radkov. The goal was subject to a review, where it was disallowed due to an offside.

Halifax got on the board at 3:53 on the powerplay, as Samuel Rousseau won a faceoff back to Oleg Kulebiakin who blasted the puck past Radkov just two seconds into the man advantage. Quinn Kennedy brought the Mooseheads back to within two with his 24th of the season at 11:51, firing a shot from the blue line into the Saint John goal. The Sea Dogs responded at 14:12, with Dylan Rozzi tipping a shot from Everett Baldwin past Bresson.

With the loss, Halifax falls to 24-26-3-3 on the season.

Donovan earned first star of the game with a pair of goals and an assist. Second star went to Olivier Groulx with three assists, while Kulebiakin was awarded third star with a goal and an assist.

The Mooseheads return to the Scotiabank Centre on Sunday, Mar. 1st for the second match of their four-game home-stand when they host the Quebec Remparts.

Puck drop is set for 3 p.m. Live coverage can be heard on 95.7 NewsRadio, with Garreth MacDonald hosting the pre-game show beginning at 2:30 p.m.
