Halifax Mooseheads couldn’t turn a strong start into a win Friday, falling 7-4 to the Drummondville Voltigeurs at Centre Marcel Dionne.
Malik L’Italien opened the scoring for Halifax at 6:25 of the first period, crashing the net and putting away a rebound off a shot from Shawn Carrier. Drummondville replied on the power play after Carrier was sent off for interference. Marc-Olivier Beaudry fired a point shot that found its way past Cirka at 7:25, just 24 seconds into the man advantage. Daniel Walters restored the lead for the Mooseheads at 12:17, driving down the left wing and snapping a shot past Voltigeurs goaltender Mathys Fortin.
Halifax extended its lead early in the second period when Jasu Mensonen’s shot produced a rebound that Oleg Kulebiakin buried for his 25th of the season. The Mooseheads kept pressing, and Lincoln Waugh made it 4-1 with a shot from the left-wing circle that beat Fortin and prompted Drummondville to turn to backup Jan Larys.
But the momentum turned as Drummondville answered with six straight goals. Hugo Dufour cut into the lead at 7:37, and Jesse Allecia scored twice to tie the game before the end of the period.
The Voltigeurs controlled the third. Louis-Félix Bourque capitalized on a Halifax turnover, using the Mooseheads defence as a screen to beat Cirka and give Drummondville its first lead of the night. Allecia completed his hat trick soon after, and Bourque added an empty-net goal as the Voltigeurs completed a sweep of the season series.
The loss drops Halifax to 23-25-3-3 on the season.
Drummondville claimed all three stars. Allecia earned first star with three goals and an assist, Bourque was named second star with two goals, and Renaud Poulin took third star with four assists.
The Mooseheads have Saturday off before wrapping up their road trip Sunday, Feb. 22, when they visit the Rimouski Oceanic at Colisée Financière Sun Life. Puck drop is set for 4 p.m. Live coverage is available on 95.7 NewsRadio with Garreth MacDonald.
