Independent Lunenburg West MLA considers her next political party

Politicians could soon be getting in on the floor-crossing game in Nova Scotia.

Since Prime Minister Mark Carney took over the federal government in 2025, five opposition Members of Parliament have crossed the floor.

Now, a Progressive Conservative-turned-Independent MLA in Nova Scotia says she’ll be consulting with her constituents before deciding on the next chapter of her political career.

Lunenburg West MLA Becky Druhan was elected twice as a member of the PC party, first in 2021 and again in 2024.

She served as Education Minister and as Minister of Justice and Attorney General before resigning from cabinet and leaving the PC caucus during a shuffle last year.

At the time, Druhan said that the decision was due to a difference in principles.

Currently sitting as an independent, Druhan says she’s turning to her constituents to decide what to do next.

She says there’s a difference between fighting for something and building it, adding that being independent allows her to hold government to account even as it may not allow her to build the solutions she knows are possible.

“I’ve been clear about what drives my work. I am committed to advancing effective, accountable government that serves Lunenburg West and all Nova Scotia with diligence and integrity. I will keep doing that,” writes Druhan in a social media post, adding she wants residents to continue to reach out with their suggestions. “The next step is one we should shape together.”
