The Department of Natural Resources has trapped and killed two coyotes after an alarming incident in Herring Cove.
“Three or four teenagers were walking down the road, and the coyotes had come out onto the road and approached them,” says Mike Boudreau, human wildlife conflict biologist with the Natural Resources department.
The teens screamed and started to run. Boudreau says it’s a natural response, but not the right one.
“We don’t recommend running, that’s for sure,” says Boudreau. “Because, in some instances, it does initiate a chase response, and they will chase.”
One of the teens separated from the others ran up a driveway and into a house just in time. Boudreau says the coyote was seen doing figure 8’s outside the home before it finally left.
Boudreau says it’s not normal behaviour for coyotes, and that’s why the animals were trapped and put down.
