Council this week: another crack at the parking ban

Time is running out on the winter parking ban, but one regional councillor is taking another run at getting it changed.

Coun. Dawn Sloane (Halifax-Downtown) has another motion on today’s council meeting agenda, asking to send the transportation minister a letter with specific requests for changing the ban.

“If no snow has fallen, there’s no need for giving out tickets,” she said. “And if there’s no snow removal operations being performed, then there should be no tickets given out as well.”

The recommendations also ask for allowing alternate-side parking in older parts of town and distinct regulations for the downtown core, suburbs and rural parts of the municipality.

Sloane says nothing will change this season.

“There’s no way that the changes could be put in place this year and we have maybe three weeks left of this craziness, as I call it,” she said.

Also on this week’s council agenda is a public hearing, set for 6 p.m., on the Canadian Cancer Society’s request to have the relay for life exempted from noise bylaws.

The audit and finance committee will also report back on changes to the CAO’s power to authorize spending when council isn’t in session.
