Macdonald Bridge closes Thursday for the weekend

By Meghan Groff

The Macdonald Bridge will shut down to vehicle traffic at 7 p.m. Thursday, September 29 and stay that way for the rest of the weekend.

It's expected to reopen at 5:30 a.m. Monday, October 3.

The bike lane and sidewalk will stay open.

This is one of five upcoming closures planned for the Macdonald, including Thanskgiving weekend.

The only weekend it will be open between now and mid November will be October 22 and 23 when the MacKay will be shut down.

So basically, Haligonians can expect a bridge closure for the next six weekends.

However Halifax Harbour Bridges cautions the work is all weather dependent, so the schedule is subject to change.

HHB adds they try to avoid full closures as much as possible, and sometimes they can get away with just shutting down an individual lane for regular maintenance.

But some projects, like resurfacing and bearing replacements, can't be completed with traffic moving on the bridge.
