Drivers urged to be extra cautious during afternoon commute

Halifax Regional Police are asking Haligonians to be extra cautious and not to rush if they have to drive anywhere.
They say road conditions have deteriorated with Thursday's snowfall and officers have already received many reports of crashes due to slippery roads and reduced visibility.
“Before heading out, take the time to clear all the snow off your entire vehicle, including the roof,” HRP recommends. “Leaving snow on your vehicle can be dangerous to other road users, especially if it blows off in slabs.”
“Ensure that all windows are clear of ice, snow and frost. This not only increases visibility but is required by law.”
Police say drivers will likely need to travel well below the posted speed limit and give themselves extra space when following behind another driver.
“When approaching a red light or stop sign, begin stopping earlier to help prevent sliding into the intersection,” they add. “Keep a watchful eye out for other road users, pedestrians and cyclists.”
