Halifax Regional Police issue notification about high-risk offender

Halifax Regional Police have issued a public notification about a man who has been assessed as being a high-risk to reoffend.

Michael Gary Gilbert, 51, has finished a sentence for sexual assault, sexual exploitation, three counts of sexual interference with a person under 14 , four counts of printing or publishing child pornography, possession of child pornography, printing or distributing obscene material and possession of a Schedule II substance.

According to police, Gilbert is required to follow strict conditions including:

  • Not have any contact – including communicating by any means – with a person who is under the age of 16 years, unless under the supervision of a person whom the court considers appropriate.
  • Not engage in any activity, employment or volunteer work that involves being in a position of trust or authority towards any person under the age of 16.
  • Not use a computer system for the purpose of communicating with any person under the age of 16.
  • Not attend any public park, public swimming area, daycare center, school ground or community center where one might reasonably expect children under the age of 16 to be present. 

“This information is provided to alert members of the public of his presence in our community and is not intended to encourage any form of vigilante activity or other unreasonable conduct,” said HRP in a news release.

“We ask citizens to call police at 902-490-5020 if they believe Gilbert is violating his release conditions.”
