Man killed on Highway 102 while trying to help another driver

By Meghan Groff

RCMP say a man was struck and killed on Highway 102 as he tried to help another driver.

It happened just before 9:30 p.m. Thursday in the Alton area.

Mounties say an SUV in the northbound lanes hit a deer. The driver was able to pull over to the shoulder.

Officers were on scene waiting for a tow truck to arrive.

Police say the driver of a pickup truck in the southbound lanes pulled over to help.

He crossed over the southbound lanes and the median, but was struck by a passing pickup truck while walking across the northbound lanes.

The officers on scene called in EHS and fire crews and started giving the man first aid, but the 76-year-old was pronounced dead.

The other pickup truck driver was not hurt.

Highway 102 was shut down for several hours while a collision reconstructionist examined the scene.

RCMP say their investigation continues.
