Development proposed for planned wilderness area

Environmentalists are worried that a proposed wilderness area near Bayers Lake is about to become a housing development.

HRM designated the land around Susie and Quarry lakes as municipal parkland three years ago, but since then, none of it has been bought from the private owners.

The CBC reports the landowners filed a development application this summer, proposing a $2.5 billion residential project.

A city staff report says there’s no need for the development, but Coun. Peter Lund says even if the application isn’t approved – the municipality can’t afford to buy the land.

Environmentalist Chris Miller says the most important wilderness near halifax is at stake and HRM should honour the promise to protect it.
