Millbrook fatality Nova Scotia’s 30th workplace death

The man killed yesterday when a prefabricated home fell on him was Nova Scotia’s 30th workplace fatality this year.
The 30 workplace deaths has the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour raising the alarm and calling for better training and tougher scrutiny.
“When you start seeing trends of increases of serious accidents and fatalities it’s not an anomoly — it’s a pattern,” says Nova Scotia Federation of Labour president Rick Clark.
“And it’s not only in Nova Scotia it’s something that’s happening across the country and we’re very very concerned that there’s not enough attention being paid to training and to prevention.”
Kirby Beers, 34, of New Brunswick died when the pre-fab house came down on him while workers were preparing to move the structure.
Workplace safety officers are now investigating.
Clark says there are no mandatory training requirements in Nova Scotia and says he wants a special prosecutor appointed to enforce the province’s labour standards and lay charges if necessary.
