Nova Scotian soldier killed in Afghanistan

A Nova Scotian soldier has died in Afghanistan.

The military identified the four Canadian soldiers killed when their armoured vehicle hit an improvised explosive device Wednesday south of Kandahar City.

Sgt. Kirk Taylor a member of 84 Independent Field Battery, Royal Canadian Artillery, based in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia was serving with the Kandahar Provincial Reconstruction Team.

Also killed were Sgt. George Miok, 28, Cpl. Zachery McCormack, 21, both of Edmonton, and Pte. Garrett Chidley, 21, of Cambridge, Ont.

All the soldiers were reservists.

A Facebook tribute page was set up for Sgt. Taylor today and was steadily gaining numbers.

“Sgt Taylor was a good man. He was one of the most reliable and competent NCO’s I had the pleasure to work with several times in the past few years,” posted Charles JC Meyers on the page.

“This past year he was on work up training in Shilo and I had the opportunity to sit with him a few times for a coffee and talk. His sense of humour and the way he expressed himself while giving a helpful suggestion will be missed.”

A Canadian journalist also died in the blast, Michelle Lang, a Canwest journalist from Calgary, was in Afghanistan for only two weeks and was on her first patrol.

Four Canadian soldiers were also injured as well as a Canadian civilian official.
