Arrest made in New Year’s fight death

A scuffle at a new year’s eve party has turned into manslaughter charges for a Halifax man.
Twenty-four-year-old Ryan Leeds faces manslaughter charges in relation to the death of 23-year-old Nathaniel Welsh, Halifax police announced Monday.
Russell died in hospital of serious head injuries after a fight with another man, outside a party on Russell Street in North End Halifax, just after 1 a.m. on New Year’s Day.
“We had a suspect in mind from very early on in the investigation, and Ryan Leeds of Halifax did turn himself last night at about 6pm at Police Headquarters,” said police spokesperson Theresa Rath.
“He was interviewed throughout the night last night and again today.”
Leeds, who is due in provincial court Tuesday also faces a charge of breach of recognizance.
Despite the arrest, police say they still want to hear from anyone who has information in the case, but hasn’t yet spoken with investigators.
“(They are) asked to call 490-5016, or they may do so anonymously through Crime Stoppers,” Rath said.
