Long lineups prompt more overcrowding alerts at QEII

The new year hasn’t relieved a familiar problem at the QEII.

Hospital officials  declared a “Code Census” three times on Monday because of overcrowding in the emergency room.

Hospital spokesman John Gillis says while there’s no single reason for the backlog, an influx of mostly elderly patients was a contributing factor.

He says it’s seniors tend to have multiple ailments, and their needs are more complex and time-consuming.

There have been more than 12 Code Census alerts at the QEII emergency room since September.
