Winter parking ban creates heat

HRM’s winter parking ban had the talk show lines buzzing on News957 Wednesday morning.
“People should be able to go out for dinner and be able to get into their cars and get home and if they decide to stay and listen to music or something, they shouldn’t be penalized,” said downtown councillor Dawn Sloane on News 95.7’s Maritime Morning with Andrew Krystal.
While the ban makes life easier for plow operators, some residents can’t stand it. Especially when tickets are going on windshields when there’s no snow, and no other place to park.
Sloane says she wants to change the parking ban but can’t over rule the city staffer responsible.
On the other side of the issue, John from Glen Margaret says he’s tired of councillors “beating their chests” and the “gum-flapping” over the parking ban.
“We go through this stupidity annually, every single year, when the snow starts to fly, and all we get is a bunch of dysfunctional councillors sitting around whining about it,” he said.
However, Sloane said she plans on taking the issue to the province. In the first month of the ban this year, more than 4000 tickets were issued creating more than $225,000 for city coffers.
