Nursing home security deposits nixed

Nova Scotia’s seniors, living in nursing and residential care homes, will have a little extra money in their pockets.
Security deposits are now a thing of the past in the province’s nursing homes and residential care facilities.
“These security deposits could range anywhere from $900 to $4700 per senior,” said Health Minister Maureen MacDonald Wednesday.
Jack Hatcher of the Group of IX, that represents seniors groups in the province, says the deposits have been an unnecessary burden for years.
“To the vast majority of seniors who are on fixed incomes and using their life savings, it means a lot to them and their families,” says Hatcher.
Security deposits gathered since 2005 are due to be returned by April 12.
