Public meetings on council size begin tonight

A city council committee begins a round of public meetings tonight that could see council’s size shrunk.
It’s called a District Boundary Review, and it’s something the city’s required to do every 10 years.
City council currently consists of has 23 councillors and the mayor. After these public hearings the review committee will make a recommendation on whether to cut the number, leave it as is, or even increase council’s size.
Mayor Peter Kelly is on record as favouring a smaller council.
“I would not be opposed to a smaller council, but we also said along the way that we would be open and fair to the public,” said Kelly.
Kelly says all HRM councillors have been asked to keep their views to themselves for the time being so residents can have their say.
“We have to be non-biased through this process. We have to be open to hear all points of view from the public,” he said “That’s why we’re going throughout HRM. That’s why we want the public to come out and bring forward their ideas and perspectives.”
The first public meeting begins tonight at 6:30 at the Keshen Goodman Library off Lacewood in Clayton Park. A complete list of meeting dates and locations can be found here.
