Montreal-bound Via Rail train derails

A young Halifax area woman won’t be forgetting her very first train trip, after a Via Rail train bound for Montreal derailed near Quebec City early Thursday.

“Everyone woke up because the train was slamming on the brakes, the lights went out and sparks kind of went everywhere,” says 19-year-old Katie Moses who was one of the 120 passengers on board. “And I fell on the floor, the lady next to me was trying to help me up and everyone was freaking out.

The car she was in stayed upright but the one behind her looked like it didn’t.

“We looked back and the car behind us was totally on its side,” says Moses.

She says although her car was upright, it did hit part of a house and went down a steep hill. Moses says she was shaken up, but wasn’t hurt.

Via Rail reports only minor injuries.

Transportation and Safety Board officials are looking into the cause of the derailment.
