Two diesel-electric hybrid buses begin routes in HRM

Starting Tuesday, two diesel-electric hybrid buses are running routes in HRM.
“This isn’t your typical city bus,” says Minister of Conserve Nova Scotia Bill Estabrooks. “It’s my pleasure to be the first to welcome you aboard.”
He says the 60-foot buses will reduce greenhouse gases by 49 tonnes per year.
“That’s important because, in Nova Scotia, the transportation sector accounts for more than 37 per cent of our energy costs and more than 25 per cent of our greenhouse gas emmisions,” says Estabrooks.
The province plans to monitor the rate of fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emmisions over the next 18 months. Then they will determine whether to purchase more hybrid buses.
Mayor Peter Kelly thanked the province for the $600,000 contribution to the $2.6 million expenditure.
