A burning ban is in effect in Halifax, but it doesn’t feel that way to Halifax Fire Department dispatchers.
They’re still getting several calls a day for brush fires.
“Some folks are, unfortunately, still burning grass,” says Dave Meldrum with Halifax Fire and Emergency. “Or they’re having other types of outdoor fires that really we don’t want anyone to do.”
He says most of the fires, nearly 100 since the beginning of the month, are started by people.
“It’s dangerous for folks, and it’s also dangerous for our firefighters who have to respond with lights and sirens to these fires,” says Meldrum.
He says unseasonably warm weather, along with a lack of snow cover or rain, has left last year’s grass dry and perfect for burning.
Meldrum says the department is concerned about a repeat of the massive fires in previous years.
“Please respect our burning ban,” says Meldrum. “We really need cooperation.”
