Keeping the power close to home

The Nova Scotia government isn’t exactly dancing for joy or popping Champagne corks. It is, however, expressing some relief after the death of the proposed $3.2 billion deal between Hydro Quebec and NB Power.
The energy minister says the province no longer has to consider the Quebec company as a regional partner as it moves forward with possible energy solutions.
“We’ve always looked forward to working with our regional partners, and let’s call it like it is. Our regional partners are in St. John’s, Charlottetown and Fredericton and not in Quebec City,” Minister Bill Estebrooks tells News 95.7 today.
“Nova Scotia has never been an energy island, never been an energy island…. We have to work with our partners and it’s certainly going to be less complicated dealing with Fredericton as opposed to Quebec City,” said Estebrooks.
There was some concern a deal between NB Power and Hydro Quebec would undermine Nova Scotia’s chance at cheap hydro-electric power from a second Churchill Falls project.
