Bail denied for co-accused in Jennifer Horne murder

Ashley Haley has been denied bail.

Haley, along with Desmond Maguire, is charged with first degree murder in the 2007 killing of 20-year-old Jennifer Horne in Dartmouth.

Haley had applied for bail under the adult bail supervision program, but in a nearly hour-long decision released Thursday, Supreme Court Justice Arthur Leblanc rejected it.

A publication ban covers the reason for the decision.

Horne’s step-uncle Steve Andrews says they’re pleased with the decision.

“We feel like we’ve made a big step in this long journey, another step,” he said. “It is a long journey towards realizing justice for Jennifer.”

The case has been fraught with delays and the family has often expressed frustration over the long waits.

But Andrews says they’re glad to be one step closer to trial.

“We’re maintaining our faith in the system,” he said. “We know that now that we will move on another step and go towards trial and justice will be served one day. We know that this is going to happen”

The trial is scheduled for June.
