After four decades of the coconut cream pie, the grilled haddock special and the best rice pudding in town, the Spartan Grill on Quinpool Road will close its doors Sunday.
Owner Maria Kyreakakos says it’s time for her and her husband Nick to retire after 44 years in the business. The family has been thinking about the change for three years and has been in negotiations with the new owners since Christmas.
“My husband is getting older. I am getting older. My husband, now, his legs are giving up so there was no way we could do it anymore. I couldn’t do it by myself,” Kyreakakos tells News 95.7.
She says her children are grown, but have their own businesses and are not taking over the landmark eatery. In its more than four decades the spot has been come a meeting and eating place for students, politicians and families.
“I am going to miss everybody so much because most of them who come in here are my friends. They’re not our customers. We treated everybody like our sons and daughters,” said Kyreakakos.
The business has been sold to an Egyptian family and is due to reopen with a new menu in a few weeks.
