Expense mistake ’embarrassing’: premier promises to pay back mileage claim

Politician expenses are in the spotlight again after the Opposition pointed out that the premier claimed nearly $500 in mileage that he shoudln’t have.
Darrell dexter says it was an honest mistake, and he will pay the money back.
The expense mistake happened when Dexter and his wife, drove to Vermont for a conference last summer. Dexter went on to another conference in Regina by plane – his wife drove back to Nova Scotia without him.
The premier says his staff made the mistake of expensing mileage for the whole trip instead of just the portion when he was in the car.
Liberal leader Stephen McNeil pointed out the mistake during question period at Province House on Tuesday.
He says in light of the recent expense scandal, all MLAs need to be extra diligent in their expense claims.
Dexter says he reviews his expenses before they’re submitted but missed the mistake. He says the oversight is embarrassing, and has promised to repay just over $485 to taxpayers.
