Councillor wants plan for community gardens

Gardening on city-owned plots could become easier.

Connaught-Quinpool Councillor Jennifer Watts wants to see a clear policy for the city to deal with requests for garden plots on HRM owned land.

“Making it more transparent so if people are interested in doing this they have an easy way to access information,” says Watts.

She says community gardens could be great for people in condos and apartments and adds there are already a few independant ones on the peninsula now.

“On church land, on community organizations’ land, on schools, schools have been very involved,” says Watts.

She says a clear policy could make it simpler for groups to go to the city and ask to set up a garden.

She hopes to bring the issue to council Tuesday.
