MLAs will now be able to have the Speaker’s office pay some of their monthly bills instead of paying out-of-pocket and getting reimbursed.
The Internal Economy Board has decided it’s not going after five MLAs who haven’t paid back excessive expenses, named in the Auditor General’s report.
Liberal Manning MacDonald is not happy about it but he isn’t demanding a specific action.
“What you suggest I do about it, the government controls the committee,” says MacDonald. “I’m just saying we’re employing two sets of rules here.”
Recurring monthly expenses can now be paid directly by the Speaker’s office.
Progressive Conservative MLA Murray Scott says it takes a load off his office assistant.
“She’s not an account manager or an office manager either,” says Scott. “She’s an MLAs assistant to help with constituent issues.”
MLAs can decide whether they want to make the switch.
