Spryfield wildfires prompted firefighting changes: official

HRM fire officials say they made some changes to firefighting practices after the Spryfield wildfires – but won’t provide specifics.
The fire service and city are being sued by insurance companies on behalf of 20 homeowners whose homes were lost or damaged in the fires, which started a year ago today.
Fire Service spokesperson Dave Meldrum says internal reviews are common after a major fire and there were several after the wildfire because it was such a major event.
He says the changes made involve operational procedure and how the department works with the Department of Natural Resources, but in light of the lawsuits, Meldrum says he can’t go into detail.
Mayor Peter Kelly says the city will vigorously fight the suit.
