As spring blossoms in Nova Scotia wildlife experts are warning that we are sharing our environment with some increasingly active animals.
Bears are in the process of waking up from their winter hibernation.
Michael Brian with the Department of Natural Resources says once the bruins are awake their number one priority is food, no matter whose ‘food’ that may be.
“Other things that will attract bears in and around communities is people leaving pet food outside,” he said. “But it’s particularly things like garbage or compost, that attract bears to the area and other sources of food also get used.”
That means you should have your garbage secure in a shed or garage if possible, and remember bears are usually more afraid of you than you are of them.
