Teens charged in fatal car crash

The two 18-year-olds charged in connection with Sunday’s deadly East End Dartmouth car crash were in court Tuesday.
Matthew Grimm and Thomas Dixon made brief court appearances.
David Alexander Julien, 15, died when the Honda Civic he was a passenger in hit a pole on Cranberry Crescent in Dartmouth Sunday night. The driver and passenger ran away on foot, but turned themselves in to police around noon on Monday.
Dixon was released on bail for charges of breach of undertaking.
Meanwhile Grimm, who police say was the driver, faces the more serious charge of dangerous driving causing death, as well as breach of conditions and breach of parole conditions.
“We believe the three were friends,” says Theresa Rath with Halifax police. “However the charges of breach of undertaking actually relate to the fact that these individuals were to have no contact with one another.”
Grimm sat in front of about 15 supporters as his lawyer asked to adjourn until Thursday to put together a bail package.
“It is normal when people are arrested sometimes it takes a couple of days especially with serious charges to come up with a plan,” said Grimm’s lawyer Peter Planetta. “There’s a number of considerations that have to be addressed in a release plan, and so sometimes it takes some additional time to put one together.”
At one point during Grimm’s short appearance before the court, the judge asked Grim to pay attention after he was seen whispering to a supporter in the front row.
The judge agreed to adjourn the case until Thursday morning. Grimm will remain at the Burnside Correctional Facility until then.
Supporters leaving the courtroom were quiet, however one woman called him “a good kid” as she left the courthouse.
